TOP TEN RESTAURANTS
Andalusia is the home of tapas, and eating out is great fun as long
as you are prepared to take a few chances. Entering a packed bar can
be a bit intimidating, but take it slowly and you'll soon get in the
swing. Just don't try to do everything at once. Jostle your way to
the bar, and order a drink while you decide what to have. As many
places only have a chalked list in Spanish, look around at what other
people are having then just point out want you want to the waiter.
As long as you keep smiling, no one will be offended. There are, of
course, plenty of sit-down restaurants too, and the best are resurrecting
forgotten Moorish recipes and serving them in creative and modern
ways.
Amanhavis Calle Pilar 3, Benahavis (952 856026; www.amanhavis.com).
In the hills behind Marbella is the village of Benahavis, renowned
for its many restaurants - at least 30. This is one of the best, housed
in a 16th-century building. It also has nine exotically decorated
rooms from pounds 75 per night. Dinner is around pounds 30.
Casa Fidel Calle Maestra Ayala 3, Benalmadena Pueblo (952 449165).
It's not all fast food on the Costa del Sol. For an elegant dinner,
head into the hills to Benalmadena village behind the resort. In a
traditional Andalusian house with a pretty terrace, seasonal ingredients
are given a refined twist by one of the best chefs in Andalusia. About
pounds 25 a head.
Eslava Calle Eslava 5, Seville (954 906568). One of the best and most
popular bars in Seville with traditional and modern tapas, all skilfully
prepared. The changing menu might include spinach strudel, steak in
blue cheese sauce or hake with garlic shoots. Plenty of vegetarian
options. Around pounds 6 a head.
El Faro Calle San Felix 15, Cadiz (956 211068). Hidden away in the
old town in Cadiz is one of the top restaurants in Andalusia, run
by the Cordoba family. Either go for the first-class fish in the restaurant
or the imaginative tapas in the lively bar. Around pounds 25 for dinner,
pounds 12 for tapas, including wine.
Posada del Moro Julia y Lucia Paseo del Moro 18, Cazalla de la Sierra
(954 884858). Fifty miles north of Seville is the small town of Cazalla
de la Sierra, renowned for its charterhouse and now a popular weekend
destination for gourmet Sevillanos. Come here to experience original
dishes
